Soil Preparation is fundamental to the success of any landscape project.

Coventry Gardeners stresses the importance of soil preparation. We rototill deeply to break up clay. Then the texture and fertility of the soil is improved by adding compost and rototilling again. Our goal is to improve drainage and promote root growth by creating a gradual change from the amended soil to the hard clay pan below.

The final step before planting is to add fertilizer and diatomaceous earth. The diatomaceous earth helps improve the texture of the soil and control insect damage.

After planting, the beds are mulched with shredded hardwood bark to prevent weeds and conserve soil moisture.
